Health and Wellness

BCCS places a strong emphasis on good nutrition and making healthy food choices.  Research shows that two components, good nutrition and physical activity before, during, and after the school day, are strongly correlated with positive student outcomes.

BCCS is committed to working with families and the community to ensure that all students graduate knowing how to take care of their minds, their bodies, and those around them. For students to have the opportunity to achieve personal, academic, developmental, and social success, they need positive, supportive, and health-promoting learning environments at every level, in every setting, throughout the school year.

Packed lunches and snacks from home must meet the requirements of our healthy food policy.  A full, healthy lunch is provided by the DOE.  The menu can be found online here.  For students who choose to bring their own lunch, we advise packing a well-balanced meal.

Established in 2010, the Bubble Foundation began as a small organization seeking to make a significant difference in one school.

Since that first successful program at Haven, Bubble’s reach has grown exponentially, providing 17 underserved schools and over 7,200 children in New York City with our proven curriculum in nutrition and wellness.

Wellness Committee

BCCS’ wellness committee provides a way to inform teachers, staff, students and families about the work the school is doing to improve the health and academic success of its students. The school wellness committee is also a way to ensure that district level wellness policies are implemented at the building level. In addition, these committees represent the unique perspective of the community in a school building. This enables the health priorities and activities put in place to truly reflect the needs and interests of that school.

Brighter Choice Community School has proudly and successfully implemented the Alternative Lunch Menu.

Each school day New York City Public School students are able to enjoy FREE breakfast and lunch meals. Parents and guardians can return a completed paper application to their child's school or they can apply online at www.myschoolapps.com/Application using any electronic device with an internet connection. Households need to complete only one application for all children living in a home attending Pre-k to high school.

If you have questions regarding the application contact SchoolFood's Help Desk at 877.363.6325.

Brighter Choice Community School

A progressive, public elementary school with Spanish dual language program. Our project-based, integrated curriculum focuses on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, ARTS & math) and language immersion. We believe that children learn best when they engage in hands-on and playful experiences that are as authentic as possible.

Brighter Choice Community School is a proud school member of Community School District 16.
