In second grade, we have an exciting social studies curriculum, which includes traveling back in time and learning all about New York City’s past and how government leaders, as well as community members, worked together to provide goods and services for their communities. As part of our Fall social studies unit of study, New York City Over Time, we are learning about the first inhabitants of New York City; The Native Americans. Students learn about the way of life long ago and explore how New York City has changed over time.

This unit is conceived of as an inquiry-based introduction to New York City over time. Students conduct research on periods of New York City’s history using textual and visual resources inclusive of field trips and interviews. Students use timelines to organize 400 years of historical time and demonstrate historical thinking. Our hard work is celebrated in November for our end of the unit celebration.
